The roar of the wind was so constant, so deafening, that Hauberrisser began to think that all around was shrouded in a deathly hush. It was only when he went to nail back the trembling shutters, so that they would not be blown against the glass, and found he could not hear the hammering, that he realised how great the din outside must be.

… when he did risk a tentative glance, he saw it still towering up undamaged, but it was an island in a sea of rubble: the rest of the frieze of spires, roofs and gables had been almost completely flattened.

How many cities are there left standing in Europe? he wondered with a shudder. The whole of Amsterdam has been ground to dust like crumbling rock; nothing left of a rotten civilization but a scatter of rubbish. He was gripped with awe as he suddenly comprehended the magnitude of the cataclysm.

Published in the middle of the Great War for Civilization, Austrian Gustav Meyrink’s 1916 novel The Green Face imagined a post-war Amsterdam crammed with refugees from many nations. Hauberrisser, a man tired of “the old game of civilization: first peace to prepare for war and then war to win back peace,” wants to see “a fresh, unknown world.” Idle curiosity propels him on a mystical quest that starts with a chance entry into Chider Green’s Hall of Riddles. He moves through a city of unemployed intelligentsia and the “dregs of Paris and London, of the cities of Belgium and Russia, fleeing in panic the revolutions that had broken out in their own countries … aristocrats who would rather die than crawl.” He will meet a Zulu witch doctor, a fake Polish count, a mystical entomologist, and a group of occultists who seek eternal life by slow transformation of their bodies. One predicts his ward, Eva, who longs for death, may be Hauberrisser’s prophesied wife in a marriage of destiny out of which will come a new world.

That wind that roars through Europe at the end of the novel blows in a new spiritual order.

Turn Off Your Mind

I’ve longed liked Gary Lachman’s articles in the Fortean Times. I’m also an admirer of his work, under the name Gary Valentine, with the rock band Blondie, particularly his song “X Offender”.

So, it was only a matter of time before I decided to read one of his books.

Review: Turn Off Your Mind: The Mystic Sixties and the Dark Side of the Age of Aquarius, Gary Lachman, 2001. 

Lachman’s basic thesis is that several elements of the mystic 1960s led not just to the Summer of Love but the murders of Charles Manson and that the strains of thought that produced both go back to the late 1890s.

It’s an interesting story, but most parts of it were familiar to me already, and I’m not going to talk much about them. I am also not sympathetic to mysticism, the Summer of Love, or the spirit of the 1960s.

What I am going to talk about is the surprising amount of material in the book about writers and works of fantastic fiction and how they were connected to the mystic Sixties.

Louis Pauwels and Jacques Bergier’s not only wrote the very popular The Morning of the Magicians, but Bergier also wrote a letter praising H. P. Lovecraft that appeared in the March 1936 issue of Weird Tales. The Morning of the Magicians, published in 1960, had Fortean material and centered on mysticism, transcendence, mutation and the evolution of consciousness. It was a heady mix that drew from the zeitgeist.

World War One in Fantastic Fiction: “Far Below”

One of the most popular stories ever published in Weird Tales

My suspicion is that this story lies fairly far upstream in the tributary that became the X Files and the Hellboy and MIB series: secret government guardians protecting us from a weird menace.

Here the scope of operation is one subway line beneath New York City. The agency is the Special Subway Detail.

Skillfully told almost entirely in dialogue between a man visiting his friend at work — where his friend leads the Special Subway Detail, the organization he started 25 years ago, the menace and its past and future are revealed. There is a nice section with adumbrations of the menace’s history. H. P. Lovecraft even gets a mention as a character. So does Washington Irving, and I’m not sure, in that case, exactly what Johnson is alluding to.

The story’s only real fault is that bits of Lovecraftian prose, phrases and adjectives, seem a bit out of character for the diction of the main speaker.

The World War One content is brief. At the beginning of the story, the leader of the Special Subway Detail talks about how the menace came to the city’s attention:

“To his time — man, Walker hadn’t served his first term as mayor when this thing started! It goes back to World War days — and even before that. The wreck of the train, I recall, passed as a German spy plot to keep us from going in with the Allies. The newspapers howled bloody murder about alleged ‘confessions’ and evidence they claimed they had. We let ’em howl, or course. Why not? America was as good as in the war anyhow, by then. And if we’d told the people of New York City what really wrecked that subway train — well, the horrors of Chateau-Thierry and Verdun and all the rest of them put together wouldn’t have equaled the shambles that rioting mobs would have made of this place!”

The references to Chateau-Thierry and Verdun are pretty standard uses of the Great War (hence the “and all the rest of them”) as ready metaphor.

The “German spy plot” makes reference to the German sabotage efforts against American industry and horse raising which were supplying the Allies. America may have been technically neutral, but the British blockade made that neutrality a dead letter.
